The Terrific Turkey

Wild Turkey Nature Study

A Hands-On Science & Nature Unit for Curious Kids

There is so much more to a turkey than Thanksgiving!

Wild turkeys can fly. They sleep high in trees. They have incredible eyesight, communicate with an entire collection of sounds, and can even change the color of their heads depending on what they're feeling.

This hands-on turkey unit takes kids beyond the basics to discover just how surprising these familiar birds really are.

Through beautifully illustrated lessons, games, experiments, creative projects, and hands-on activities, kids will explore turkey anatomy, behavior, senses, communication, survival, habitats, feathers, life cycles, and more.

And while they're busy investigating turkeys, they'll sneak in a little science, math, writing, art, observation, and critical thinking along the way.

Inside the Unit

Your child will explore topics such as:

• How turkeys see, hear, communicate, and stay safe
• Why a turkey's head can change color
• How and why wild turkeys fly
• Where turkeys sleep and what they do throughout the day
• Turkey feathers and what different feathers are used for
• How turkey poults communicate before they even hatch
• Predators, habitats, food, and survival
• Fascinating turkey behaviors and facts most kids have never heard

But this isn't just a unit to read.

Kids will map a turkey's journey through the forest, test their memory, listen to real turkey calls, investigate how sound travels through an egg, create their own turkey feathers, collect and graph "bugs," write conversations between a hen and her unhatched poult, and more.

Learning That Feels Like Play

This unit was created for families who want learning to feel curiosity-led, hands-on, and genuinely fun.

Use it from beginning to end, spend longer on the activities your child loves, or simply pick and choose what works for your family. There is no complicated schedule or "right" way to use it.

The goal?

For your child to finish the unit thinking:

“I had NO idea turkeys were this cool.”
