Fall Limerick Poetry Curriculum
Fall Limerick Poetry Curriculum
Make poetry something your child actually wants to write!
The Fall Limerick Poetry Curriculum turns poetry lessons into a playful, hands-on writing experience filled with funny characters, colorful fall themes, original poems, creative challenges, and plenty of opportunities for kids to become poets themselves.
Instead of simply explaining what a limerick is and handing kids a blank page, this unit walks them through the writing process step by step. Children read original fall-themed limericks, explore what makes them work, discover poetic devices, play with rhyme and rhythm, build stronger word choices, brainstorm silly ideas, and then use what they've learned to create limericks of their own.
And because limericks are supposed to be fun, these lessons embrace the silliness! Kids will meet mischievous squirrels, troublesome turkeys, curious crows, bats, owls, pumpkins, apples and more as they discover just how creative poetry can be.
But this isn't just a collection of poetry worksheets. Each lesson gives young writers the tools they need to actually think like a poet. They'll hunt for poetic devices, experiment with better verbs, brainstorm rhyming words, imagine silly “What if?” scenarios, explore funny endings, analyze original poems, and build confidence before writing independently.
10 Fall Themes
Children get to explore poetry through 10 different fall-inspired themes:
🍂 Fall Leaves
🎃 Pumpkins
🍎 Apples
🦉 Owls
🌰 Acorns
🕷️ Spiders
🐿️ Squirrels
🦃 Turkeys
🌽 Corn
🦇 Bats
The variety keeps the lessons fresh while giving children repeated practice with the same important poetry skills.
More Than “Write a Poem”
One of the hardest parts of creative writing is figuring out what to write. That's why this curriculum doesn't leave kids staring at an empty page.
Writer's Toolbox activities help children collect ideas, build characters, choose stronger verbs, brainstorm rhymes, experiment with humor and exaggeration, and create surprising endings before they begin their own poems.
Creative extensions add another layer of fun, giving children opportunities to draw, imagine, observe and bring their poetry to life.
Perfect for:
Homeschool families, elementary poetry studies, fall homeschool lessons, creative writing units, language arts, poetry centers, co-ops, enrichment activities, and kids who think they “don't like poetry” yet.
Poetry doesn't have to feel intimidating.
With the right tools, a little imagination, and permission to be completely silly, kids can discover that writing poetry might just be one of their favorite parts of language arts.
Read it. Explore it. Play with words. Then become the poet.
